Counselling, Psychotherapy & EMDR in Bridlington and Online

EMDR Therapist

I qualified as an EMDR therapist in July 2026 and offer EMDR-informed therapy under regular supervision from an EMDR Consultant. I use a lightbar for bilateral stimulation, alongside other resourcing and grounding methods tailored to each person.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based approach that helps people process traumatic or overwhelming experiences so they feel less distressed in the present. It can be particularly helpful if you feel stuck in old patterns, experience trauma memories or triggers, or want a more targeted approach alongside talking therapy.

My EMDR work is gentle, collaborative and trauma-informed. We move at your pace, with safety and stability at the centre of the process. EMDR is not about reliving trauma. Before any reprocessing begins, we spend time building internal resources, grounding skills and a sense of emotional steadiness.

What to expect in EMDR sessions

People often find it helpful to know what EMDR actually looks like in practice. Sessions usually include:

  • A calm, structured beginning - We check in, explore what feels present for you, and make sure you feel grounded and safe before we do anything deeper.
  • Resourcing and stabilisation - This might involve guided imagery, breathwork, body-based grounding, or strengthening positive internal states. This phase is essential because it helps you feel equipped and supported before touching any difficult material.
  • Targeting the issue - Together we identify the memory, belief, sensation or trigger that feels “stuck”. You remain in control throughout, and we only move forward when you feel ready.
  • Bilateral stimulation using the lightbar - You follow the light as it moves gently from side to side. This supports the brain’s natural processing system, helping old experiences become less charged and more integrated.
  • A steady, supported pace - You’re not expected to relive trauma or go into detail. EMDR works with what naturally arises, and I guide the process while you stay anchored in the present.
  • Closing and grounding - We end sessions with grounding, reflection and stabilisation so you leave feeling settled.
